I live in a small town in Central Texas. An area where writers let alone writer's work groups are scarce. I wanting badly to belong to a group of friendly people that enjoy writing and exchange ideas with fellow writers. Since none could be found here locally I turned to the Web. After checking out the OWLs and other writer groups, I found they were too expensive for me. So I set out to build a web based group of my own. Binary Bards is the result of that desire and dream.
When I started to work on this idea my first concern was one of security for both the members of the group and their works. I would like for it to be easy for the group to communicate with each other free of the harassment of immature pranksters. I was also concerned with placing works both finished and in progress on the open web. One way around this would have been to password protect the discussion group. Sadly the host of this site will not allow password protected web pages. So with that in mind I came upon the solution I am currently using.
My dream is quite simply to see a lot of writers who enjoy writing getting together to exchange ideas and pulling one another through tight spots in their plots. In order for this to happen, there has to be someone willing to post their problem areas and then except a critique from someone willing to give them one. I would like to make a work group where everything is always cheerful and productive. To aid in the first I have decided to use three rules, two of which were borrowed from a Fidonet writer's message area. These are simply:
1. Play fair.
2. Play nice.
3. And most of all have fun.
I would love to see this Work Group grow into a close knit group of friends who all share a common interest in writing and helping other writers grow.
As of the time of my writing of this the group is still under construction. Please be patient and I will promise to do my best to get the pages finished as soon as I possibly can.
I want to have something of interest to all members of the group. I currently plan to have:
A member's bio area: A place where members can write a bio profile of themselves and have it posted for other members to read. This will I hope give you practice for writing your bios for inclusion in you plublisized works. Also I would like to include a photo of those would will not mind sharing their visages with us.
An Email Address book, where you can share your Email addresses with other work group members.
Discussion groups, where we actually work and play with other members. Currently there is only one but eventually I would like to expand this to include a general discussion group where members can get together and generally talk about whatever interests them and a seperate discussion group for every Genere.
I would also like to start having periodic chats for the members. I believe ICQ would be one of the best ways to accomplish this.
I also want to have a page for links of interest and resources that would interest the members of this group.
Although this is my dream that I am trying to make a reality, I am always open to suggestions as to things you would like to see on this web site.
If you think this would be a beneficial and enjoyable experience for you and can live with the simple rules I have set forth please feel free to send me an Email and I will give you the details on how to start participating.
